What Is a Laundry Detergent Capsule?

A laundry detergent capsule (or pod) is a pre-measured, single dose of concentrated detergent sealed in water-soluble film. The film dissolves in the wash and releases the detergent, so the user never measures or spills product.

Capsules have become one of the fastest-growing laundry formats in retail because they combine convenience with exact dosing. For brand owners, they also offer a premium shelf position and a higher value per wash than powder or bulk liquid.

A capsule has three parts:

• The film: polyvinyl alcohol (PVA/PVOH) film that dissolves in water.
• The fill: a highly concentrated liquid or gel detergent, sometimes combined with a powder phase.
• The chambers: separate compartments that keep ingredients apart until the wash, such as stain removers, brighteners or fabric care agents.

Water-Soluble Film: Why It Matters

The film decides how a capsule performs and how safe it is. A good film must:

• Dissolve fully in both cold and warm wash cycles, without residue on clothes.
• Stay strong in transport and handling, so capsules do not leak or stick together.
• Contain a bitter agent to discourage accidental ingestion.

Because water dissolves PVA film, capsule formulas contain very little free water. That is why capsule detergents are concentrated, and why film and formula have to be developed together.

Under the new EU Detergents and Surfactants Regulation (EU) 2026/405, films and polymers inside films must meet biodegradability requirements from 23 March 2032. We follow these developments for EU-bound products.
